Description

A quick and easy recipe for Mongolian Beef featuring tender beef in a sweet and savory sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds flank steak
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 4 green onions (cut into 2-inch pieces)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Slice the flank steak thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes (if using); set aside.
  3. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the sliced beef. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add half of the beef and cook until browned, then remove. Repeat with remaining beef.
  4. Add the remaining vegetable oil to the same pan, and sauté minced ginger and garlic for about 30 seconds.
  5. Pour the sauce mixture into the pan with the ginger and garlic, stir well, and add the cooked beef back into the pan. Cook for a few minutes until the sauce thickens.
  6. Add the green onions and stir everything together once more.
  7. Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired and serve hot.

Notes

Serve over rice or noodles and add steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
