Easy Beef and Broccoli Recipe (Better Than Takeout!)

  • Author: ELENE
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Description

Tender flank steak and broccoli tossed in a savory-sweet garlic soy sauce with ginger and sesame oil. A takeout favorite made at home in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 11.25 lbs flank steak, thinly sliced (no more than ¼-inch thick)
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil, divided
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 12 teaspoons ginger (fresh or dried)
  • ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 46 cups broccoli florets
  • 23 green onions, sliced
  • Red pepper flakes, optional
  • Sesame seeds, optional for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep the Beef: Place sliced steak in a zip-top bag or bowl. Add cornstarch and toss until well coated.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp sesame oil over medium heat. Add garlic and ginger; sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in soy sauce, water, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Cook the Beef: In a large skillet, heat remaining 2 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp sesame oil over high heat. Add beef in batches, cooking until browned and just cooked through (5–7 minutes total).
  4. Add Broccoli: Stir in broccoli florets. Let cook with beef for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Combine & Simmer: Pour sauce over beef and broccoli. Stir to coat evenly. Let simmer for 3–5 minutes, until broccoli is tender and sauce thickens.
  6. Optional Thickening: If sauce is too thin, dissolve 1 tbsp cornstarch in 1 tbsp water and stir into skillet until thickened.
  7. Finish & Serve: Remove from heat. Top with green onions, sesame seeds, and red pepper flakes. Serve immediately over rice or noodles.

Notes

For a lighter version, reduce sugar or replace with honey. Works great with chicken or shrimp as a protein swap.
